And another thing: why do the opening credits have to be modeled after a film from the 60s or 70s? For what possible reason?

In Jackie Brown and Death Proof it made sense, as each was an homage to styles past. But why do it for this one? Yes, Quentin, we know what a big fan of these eras you are. And why the cartoon title over Hugo what's-his-name? Tarantino didn't do much else like this in the film.

It just threw it off balance for me. What'd he make this stuff up as he went along? And is it true that Tarantino rushed production to get the movie done in time to compete at Cannes?
